US Coast Guard Auxiliary Boating Safety Information
America’s Boating Course is an eight-hour program that covers the fundamentals of boating for both youth and adult boaters. Upon completion, boaters can legally operate a boat in any U.S. state, and in Virginia and North Carolina, youth can legally operate a PWC (Personal Watercraft).

State Laws
Virginia Law: All Virginia boaters in the waters must have proof of taking a Boating
Course.
North Carolina Law: Requires that all PWC and Motor Boat Operators born after 1 Jan 1988 must have proof of completing a Boating Safety Course, if they are operating a vessel
with a 10 HP engine or greater.
