The Coast Guard announced Tuesday that its North Carolina commander has been temporarily relieved of duty due to “loss of confidence in his abilities to command.” The Coast Guard did not specify what Capt. Sean Murtagh did to bring about the change in command of Sector North Carolina. [Note: This includes Kerr Lake and Lake Gaston]

Angler hooks 105-pound blue catfish in Lake Gaston

Fisherman Zakk Royce has caught two record-breaking blue catfish in an 18-hour period. Media outlets report Royce set a state record for blue catfish Sunday when he caught a 91-pounder at Lake Gaston. Just 18 hours later, on Monday, he caught another blue catfish weighing 105 pounds at the same reservoir.

Fire Damages Home in Long Branch Subdivision

A house fire heavily damaged a home on Brookstone Drive in the Long Branch Subdivision earlier this week. The Lake Gaston Fire and EMS web page says it's units managed to keep the fire from quickly spreading. The fire happened on Tuesday afternoon and apparently started from a grease fire in the kitchen.

Northampton puts tax to the voters

Voters of Northampton County should be aware of an addition to their ballot in the primary elections for 2016. In the Nov. 30 meeting of the Northampton County Commissioners, it was approved that the decision of a supplemental school tax, to be used to fund the building of a centrally located middle/high school for Northampton County, would be decided by the public.

No-wake zone on Six Pound Creek tabled

A group of Lake Gaston residents will be going low tech in order to slow down boat traffic on Six Pound Creek. Instead of insisting a permanent no-wake zone be created in a tight turn on Lake Gaston’s Six Pound Creek, the residents instead have chosen to use diplomacy.

Opponents of uranium mining in the Roanoke River Basin saw the light at the end of the tunnel as Senior U.S. District Judge Jackson L. Kiser threw out Virginia Uranium’s motion for injunctive relief against Virginia’s governor and other officials, contending that the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 preempts the Virginia Code and requesting Virginia be forced to process permit applications for uranium mining.
