There was a somber mood on Lake Gaston among dozens of rescuers today as they entered day three of a search for a missing Virginia fisherman. Sunday’s initial rescue effort for Brian Harold of McGaheysville, Va., morphed into a recovery mission Monday, but officials are holding out hope no matter how dim it may be.
High water continues on Lake Gaston. Dominion Power, which operates the Gaston Dam, considers itself operating under "flood conditions" when it's above 201 feet. On Friday morning (Jan 8th) the lake rose to 201.75 feet and as of Saturday morning (Jan 9th), it had dropped slightly to 201.04 feet.
Fisherman Zakk Royce has caught two record-breaking blue catfish in an 18-hour period. Media outlets report Royce set a state record for blue catfish Sunday when he caught a 91-pounder at Lake Gaston. Just 18 hours later, on Monday, he caught another blue catfish weighing 105 pounds at the same reservoir.
