Citing a lack of funds, the American Veterans Tribute organization canceled its annual Fourth of July festival at Lake Gaston, near Pea Hill Creek. Throughout its past 30 years of production, the event has become known as one of the largest Independence Day celebrations in the area. (Editor's Note: This is a different event from the Longbridge Fire Department fireworks at Eaton Ferry Bridge, which will go on as scheduled on July 2nd)

On Saturday, May 7, 2016, the Lake Gaston Junior Women's Club will host its 2nd Annual Wings, Wheels & Crafts Festival. The Festival will be held at the Mecklenburg-Brunswick Regional Airport at 1495 Regional Airport Drive in Brodnax, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Admission is free with on-site cash parking for $5. Park View ROTC will open this year’s event by presenting the colors. Last year, the event drew over 1,200 people in its first year.
